How to Get Rid of Dust Mites in Your Bed

dust-mitesDust mites are tiny bugs that live in mattresses, bedding, carpets, curtains and upholstered furniture. They feed on the flakes of skin that people and animals shed daily and prefer to live in warm humid environments. Normally harmless, if you are allergic they can create a big problem. While impossible to completely irradiate, there are several methods you can do to greatly reduce the number of them in your mattress and home. The following are tips on how to kill and reduce dust mites in your home.

Expose your Sheets to Extreme Temperatures.

Dust mites prefer to live in temperatures of 70 degrees of higher and can't survive in cold places. Wash your sheets once a week in very hot water. Temperatures will need to reach over 130 degrees for the dust mites to be killed. Also dry the sheets in a hot dryer. If your sheets can not be washed on hot, freeze them over night to also kill the mites.

Reduce Humidity in your Bedroom

Dust Mites prefer humid environments of 75-80%. Place a dehumidifier or air conditioner in your bedroom to maintain a low humidity of 50% of below. Mites are unable to survive in these dry conditions.

Purchase Dust-proof Mattress Protectors

The easiest way to guarantee a dust mite free mattress is to encase your mattress and pillows in dust-proof or allergen impermeable covers. There are many brands available online and in stores that will fit all mattress and pillow types. The cases prevent allergens from getting into your mattress so you don't inhale them while you sleep and machine washable allowing for easy removal of any allergens that might get on them.
