Over time, if you sleep in the same spot, your body will begin to make indentions in your mattress. Sagging and indentations can cause discomfort and poor sleep quality.
Keep in mind that flipping your mattress and rotating it are two different things.
Some mattresses should be flipped, meaning the part that you were previously sleeping on will now be facing the box spring or platform.
Not all mattresses can or should be flipped. Be sure to read the manufacturer or general guidelines for your mattress type to see if you have a flippable mattress. In some modern mattresses, specific layers need to be the top layers, and flipping it can cause issues.
Rotating a mattress means that you will turn the mattress 180 degrees but leave the same side facing up. When rotating a mattress, the part that was previously at the head of the bed will now be at the foot.
Rotating your mattress frequently can prevent it from sagging over time or leaving lasting impressions from your sleeping position.
When purchasing a mattress, you will want to read the manufacturer's guidelines on if or how often your mattress should be rotated or flipped. Some mattresses are not double-sided and can not be flipped. Some mattresses have zoned support for hips or areas of the body and need to be placed correctly to work properly.
At Bedzzz Express, we suggest rotating your new mattress every month for the first six months. This will help a new mattress show fewer body impressions.
While each mattress is different, there are some general guidelines you can follow depending on the type of mattress you have. In most cases, you will want to rotate your mattress every 90 days or with the change of the seasons.
• Hybrid Mattresses - Every 6 months.
• Innerspring Mattresses - Every 3 to 6 months.
• Memory Foam Mattresses - Every 6 to 12 months.
• Pillow Top Mattresses - Every 6 to 12 months.
Flipping or rotating your mattress can be a challenging task. Here are some general guidelines that may help to make it easier.
• Remove any bedding and pillows.
• Have two people work together. Mattresses are large, so if one person can stand on each side of the mattress this will make it easier.
• Remove any fragile items from nightstands or nearby surfaces.
• For flipping - If you have a queen or twin sized mattress, it can be easier to flip if you first rotate it so the longest side is parallel to the head of the bed.
Over time, mattresses can sag or leave indents and change your sleeping position if not rotated. If you constantly have back pain and do not regularly rotate your mattress, this may be something to consider.
If your mattress already has uncomfortable indentions, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.
