One of the biggest factors in getting a good night’s sleep is temperature. After all, nobody enjoys waking up hot and sweaty.
Research suggests that having a cooler sleep environment allows you to fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and get a better quality of sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the best bedroom temperature is approximately 65° Fahrenheit.
Some people are just hot sleepers. According to HealthLine.com, , some people may get hotter at night due to illness, certain medications, hormones, or the number of sleep partners.
Another factor that plays a role in how hot you sleep could be your mattress. Some mattresses can trap body heat, causing you to get hot and disrupted sleep. Our bodies naturally drop in temperature while we sleep, but if you have a mattress that retains heat, you can actually prevent yourself from getting the quality sleep you need.
Thankfully, many mattress brands have crafted mattresses that feature the technology you need to get a cool, comfortable, and great night's sleep.
As we sleep at night, we generate body heat and perspiration. The average person loses almost 1 cup of perspiration each night (Physiology.org). Our mattresses can absorb much of this heat and perspiration.
This excessive moisture also makes the growth of allergens more likely. (This is why mattress protectors are so important!)
It’s no surprise that an older, or cheaply made, mattress often lacks breathable materials. With nowhere for our body heat to go, it builds up underneath us. As that heat builds, so too does our heart rate and sweat production, causing us to get more disturbed sleep. Instead of waking up refreshed, we wake up exhausted!
Breathable mattresses have multiple layers that allow airflow throughout the entire mattress surface and allow heat to escape. These materials often include open-cell foams, moisture-wicking fabric, ventilation holes, and airflow chambers.
Having a mattress that is constructed to promote airflow and allow moisture to evaporate helps our bodies to keep a lower body temperature. With a lower body temperature, we stay asleep longer and get more restorative sleep. With a drier and breathable mattress, allergens are much less likely to grow as well.
Some of our favorite breathable mattresses include:
Tempur-Pedic has taken the breathability of mattresses to another level with their LUXEbreeze® technology.
They have developed a Breeze Collection line of mattresses that may help you to sleep up to 8° cooler.
This LUXEbreeze® mattress is made up of several layers that work together to cool you down at night. The cover of the mattress feels instantly cool to the touch and zips off for washing. The second layer absorbs excessive heat and enables better airflow. The third layer of the mattress cycles the heat out of the mattress.
All of this is on top of a 9” base foam layer that absorbs motion as well. This mattress comes in soft or firm and sizes from Twin XL to California King. Shop online at BedzzzExpress.com.
